Keep Your Elderly Parents from Falling (Elderly Fall Coaching)

By August 23, 2016Chiropractic, Wellness

Many of us have seen, and maybe even made fun of, the Life Alert commercial where the older lady falls and can’t get up without help from someone else. As easy as this might be to make fun of, we know how debilitating and even fatal an elderly fall can be.

ELDERY FALLS ARE AFFECTED GREATLY BY THE NATURALLY DEGRADING BALANCE AND COORDINATION THAT COMES WITH OLD AGE.

As elderly parents get older, one of the most important and effective health concerns to focus on is also very easy to improve:

Balance and coordination.

These two factors naturally diminish with age, and it takes a level of work to combat their natural decline.

WHAT CAN BE DONE?

Here at Relief Plus, we offer services that can help bolster your loved ones’ balance and coordination. We work with elderly patients in two ways:

Balance exercises, core strengthening, hip and ankle mobility training, and environmental consultation.

BALANCE EXERCISES

We use “wobble boards” to coach our patients how to keep their balance and increase their natural equilibrium in our Carencro office.

CORE STRENGTHENING

Our staff educates our patients on how to use and strengthen their cores through exercises such as the blood pressure cuff exercise. This helps patients utilize their core when lifting, bending down or standing up instead of their backs. In the case that they do fall, this allows them to get back up on their own instead of being stuck on the floor for who knows how long.

HIP AND ANKLE MOBILITY

Your hip and ankle should remain fluid and mobilized, acting as a shock absorber for your knees and upper body. However, many people do not give their ankles and hips enough mobility and they lock up, not to be used again. This can cause many dangers, such as shock from normal walking going to your knees or a rolled ankle while falling.

ENVIRONMENTAL COACHING

Finally, we ask our older patients to take photos of their home and bring them into their appointments. Our staff will then look for some potential dangers in their home:

  • High couches or beds
  • Height differences between floors
  • Slippery floors
  • Tripping hazards
  • Etc.

We know that your parents might not want to sign up for these appointments because they already have so many and they don’t want to bother anyone trying to get a ride, but we want to encourage you to do everything you can to get your elderly parents and friends here.
